PREFATORY NOTE FROM LAPIDARY REPRESENTATIVE
This report covers two events that occurred during the same monitoring visit, separated by approximately four hours. I am filing them as a combined report because the second event cannot be fully described without the context of the first, and because I have found it difficult to write the second event's account separately from the first.
The delay in filing is noted. The Lapidary has not pressed me on the delay. I am grateful for this and I am aware it is not usual.
The holder's account is not included because the holder is no longer in contact with the Lapidary. The holder's departure from the registry was voluntary. I will describe the circumstances in this report. I want to be clear that I have no explanation for the holder's decision, only their statement, which I will record accurately.
I have attempted to write this report to the standard of the other field reports. I am not certain I have succeeded. The Lapidary should consider what weight to give the sections that depart from that standard.
EVENT 3 — LAPIDARY REPRESENTATIVE'S ACCOUNT
I arrived for a scheduled monitoring visit and frequency induction test, as documented in the OB-07 case file. The holder was present. The environment was as established — temperature controlled, monitoring equipment running, calibrated signal generator configured for the 438–440 Hz range.
We began the frequency test at 438 Hz. We had been running at 438 Hz for approximately twenty minutes when the holder said: "it's starting."
The fragment transitioned. Onset appeared to take approximately three seconds — longer than previously documented. The surface settled into the liquid state.
I noted the monitoring readings. Temperature: dropping. Frequency generator: still running at 438 Hz. The Lapidary will note: the event began during a frequency test at 438 Hz. The Lapidary will also note: the event may have been spontaneous and the frequency coincidental. I am noting both things because I do not know which is true and I do not want to write a report that implies I do.
The holder retrieved the depth probe from the monitoring kit. I said: "I wouldn't." The holder lowered it anyway.
I noted this. The holder had witnessed FIELD-REPORT-0041 — had read my account of saying "I wouldn't" to the monitoring representative and being ignored. The holder lowered the probe with the same intention I had had: to measure.
The probe reached 5cm before readings became erratic. At 6cm: values outside calibrated range. At 7cm, which is the maximum depth of the fragment in its solid state: the probe continued to descend. The fragment is 7cm at its deepest. The probe continued below 7cm.
We let it descend to 12cm before withdrawing it. The surface did not change during the probe's presence. The readings were: instrument error, then zeros, then values that the monitoring software later told us it had not been designed to display. They were displayed anyway.
The event ended at 2 minutes, 58 seconds. The probe was recovered undamaged. The readings resumed.
The holder and I sat in the room for some time. The room was cold. The holder said: "there's something down there."
I said: "the probe readings are inconclusive."
The holder said: "I'm not talking about the probe."
We did not discuss this further. We prepared monitoring equipment for the continued visit. The holder did not leave and neither did I. We sat in the room with the fragment for approximately four hours. We were waiting, though neither of us said this.
EVENT 4 — LAPIDARY REPRESENTATIVE'S ACCOUNT
The second event began approximately four hours after the first.
There was no frequency stimulus running. The signal generator had been switched off after Event 3. We were in passive monitoring mode. The holder was sitting approximately two metres from the fragment. I was reviewing the Event 3 data on a laptop.
The holder said: "now."
I looked up. The fragment was already in transition. Faster than any previously documented onset — less than one second from solid to liquid.
I reached for the depth probe. The holder said: "don't."
I set it down.
What followed is the section of this report that I have rewritten seven times. I am going to write it once more and file it.
The holder stood. The holder walked to the fragment. The holder stood at its edge, looking into the surface. I remained where I was. I did not approach.
The surface of the liquid state of The Black does not reflect. It does not move. It has depth that exceeds the physical dimensions of the fragment. These are documented properties. I have written them in prior reports. Looking at the surface from two metres away during Event 4, I found that I could not determine how deep it went. This is also documented. The probe data is consistent with this.
What I have not previously written, because prior events did not require it:
The depth was not empty.
I cannot describe what was there in terms that satisfy me. I will describe what I observed and the Lapidary will determine how to classify it.
There was presence at the depth. Not movement — it was not moving toward the surface and it was not moving away. It was simply there, at a depth the probe had not reached, in something that was not water, behind a surface that does not reflect. It had been there for some time. This is not a conclusion I reached through evidence. It is what I understood while I was looking at it.
The holder remained at the surface's edge for the duration of the event. The holder did not speak during this time.
Event 4 ended at 4 minutes, 32 seconds.
The holder stepped back from the fragment. The holder turned to me and said the following: "I know what it's waiting for."
I asked what.
The holder said: "I'm not going to tell you. I'm sorry. I'm going to go now."
The holder left the facility. I remained with the fragment. The fragment was solid. The room was very cold. I remained for approximately two hours, completing monitoring documentation. Then I left.
HOLDER'S SUBSEQUENT COMMUNICATION
Three days after the monitoring visit, the holder sent the following message to the Lapidary's contact address. I am including it here because it is the last communication received from the holder and it belongs in this report.
"I am writing to formally withdraw from the Lapidary registry. I am not going to give you a reason that I think you will find useful. I want to say that the Lapidary's work is important and that I am sorry to leave it incomplete. I am also not sorry, which is something I am finding difficult to hold simultaneously.
"The fragment will remain where it is. I won't be moving it. You can continue to monitor it remotely if your equipment allows. I have left the monitoring instruments in place.
"I knew what it was waiting for before Event 4. Event 4 confirmed it. That's all I'm going to say.
"Please don't contact me again. I mean this kindly."
The Lapidary has not contacted the holder again.
POST-EVENT CROSS-FRAGMENT OBSERVATIONS
During Event 4, remote monitoring of other registered fragments recorded:
Five fragments across multiple continents responded to Event 4. OB-02 — which had never previously responded to anything — responded to Event 4.
The Lapidary does not have an explanation for this.
NOTES ON THE DURATION
Event 4 lasted 4 minutes and 32 seconds.
The Lapidary is aware of the significance of 432 in certain acoustic and architectural traditions. The Lapidary is also aware that 432 Hz is used as an alternative tuning standard in some musical traditions, with advocates who attribute specific resonant or binding properties to this frequency.
The Lapidary's frequency research has focused on the 438–440 Hz range based on observed material responses. The Lapidary has not tested 432 Hz specifically.
